VAMC Project - Overview

Overview

The new Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC), scheduled for a 2013 opening in New Orleans, Louisiana, will be a state-of-the-art hospital and research facility that honors both veterans and their families. As a model for healthcare of the future, it will set the standards for patient-centered care, flexibility and sustainability by partnering with local universities to provide a solid foundation for New Orleans' new knowledge-based economy.

This new, 30-acre campus is being designed to respect its New Orleans neighborhoods, authentically reflect the culture of the region and be a cornerstone for the emerging biosciences industry in New Orleans.

The care provided to veterans over the last half of the 20th century validates both the quality and durability of the VA healthcare system and healthcare in our nation. With the establishment of the new VAMC in New Orleans, the vision and leadership of early VA health system pioneers and supporters, such as President Harry S. Truman, General Omar Bradley, and Dr. Paul R. Hawley, who helped establish symbiotic relationships between VA hospitals and academic medicine, is guaranteed to live well into 21st century and beyond.
